Shouldn't they be honest and change it to " to serve and protect each other", now that the huge secret is out that that's all they really care about doing?

Redawg don't get your panties in a twist. I'm not against HAVING police; I just wish they'd be less corrupt.

Shark, they MIGHT be.

MIGHT.

The fact is if they were as effective as you claim that they are no one would ever be murdered, shot, or anything because the police would be there quick enough to catch the criminals in time to prevent the crime or at LEAST enough time to catch them every time after the fact, but even that is a fairly rare occurance.

When was the last time anyone saw "to serve and protect" on a squad car? (other than in L.A) In fact, I have never seen it in a Police Oath of Honor either. People see it on TV and movies and therefore it s true fact?

I am really tired of these police bashing questions. It says to serve and protect because that is what they are sworn to do and they do it 24 hours a day 7 days a week. We lost a good man last week in Lake Charles, La because he was sworn to serve and protect. Deputy Alan Inzer, who was off duty at the time and was driving home came upon a robbery in progress, he stopped and got out of his car and was shot and killed by a 20 year old gang-banging, drug dealing thug with a rap sheet longer then he was old. Alan, a dedicated officer of 15 years, died serving and protecting his community. Many officer's do the same each year. And when you need them, they will be there, despite your bad and disparaging attitude. Maybe you should think about that before you decide to post again.

Funny, that's only on the LAPD's patrol cars, but when you live in the other areas of L.A. County, that's a whole different story...

Look at a CA Highway Patrol car:on the fender, it says "Safety, Service and Security", for the added duties of protecting our high-ranking state officials(and the CA Aqueduct, too)...

Ultimately "to serve and protect" is the common mission. As with any profession, there are good and bad persons. Unfortunately some people dwell on the bad. Society could not exist without some form of policing.

If you were raped or mugged and they tried to help you, you'd be thankful. Yes they can be corrupt but when you really need them they will be there!
I don't like the police but they do have an effect on society; if there were none at all, then the world would be in a terrible state.

Coming from a long family line of police and correctional officers, I know that most officers feel that this is what they need to do for their fellow American citizens...but then there are those that just ride in the cars that say "to serve and protect" cause they're clowns and are just kidding with us and themselves! What?! It's true!

That is the mission statement of the police. I know it sometimes seems that thats not what they do, but it is what they do. Just think about that when someone rear ends your car then speeds away-the police will catch the bad guy that speeds away.

It's a shame that's how you see police officers. If a family member of yours was a cop I'm sure you would feel differently. These men and women put their lives on the line daily. They do protect themselves so they can protect you and me. Show some respect. I know they're not all good cops but the majority of them are.

Picture Iraq. This is what our environment would be like without law enforcement. Sure we have military, but it's not in their job description to uphold the law. Besides, If your feeling towards the police are this way, then I can see why you've never had a good experience with them. But I'm guessing you would probably want them around when you get robbed by some crackhead right?

This motto implies that they are to protect and serve the public, but at times this doesn't seem like the case.
