i am shopping for a new desk top. is one better than a another?

If I were getting a new desktop, I would get an imac. Visually appealing, comes with OSX, you can dual boot OSX with XP or Vista. here:

But if you really dont want a mac, because you just hate OSX, and dont care you can also run windows on it, I suggest getting a HP, here
