My Mom wants to go to Tavern on the Green in NYC for her 80th birthday. While I know that this was a very classy place back in the 70's and 80's - I haven't been to New york in a long time - and I don't know if it's still a high end restaurant. If you've been in the last year or so - could you rate it on a 1-10 with 10 being the highest - and tell me why? Thanks so much.

You really go to TOTG for more of an eating experience than for the actual food. Don't get me wrong, the food is good..you aren't going to gag or anything, but not worth the price of it. If it's nice out, and you are having lunch, I would definitely request eating outside..it really is beautiful. I would say take your Mom there..if that's where she wants to go. And let them know it's her 80th birthday, they just might do something special for her. I'd go there once in awhile, just not regularly as there are so many other places to eat in NY.

You will find very few New Yorkers at Tavern on the Green, and of those that are there, very few of them eat out with any frequency. The food is very mediocre. There are so many restaurants with better food and service.

Consider The River Cafe - the food is wonderful and every seat has an incredible view of the river and the Manhattan skyline. This is a wonderful spot for such a special occasion.

Other restaurants to consider are Le Bernadin, Daniel, The Grammercy Tavern, Eleven Madison Park.

Agree with those who say tourist trap, nicely decorated but mediocre food and service. Not worth the money. No self respecting New Yorker who appreciates good food would go there. Haven't ever gone there but every review I have ever read about the place would give it a 5 at best.

If want want to take your Mother to a truely great restaurant in every regard go to the Gramercy Tavern.

As far as Zagat's goes there aren't even enough people in New York reporting on it for it to have a rating. Gramercy Tavern has been consistanty rated the number one restaurant in New York for the last five years running.

Then again, if your mother wants to go there --

Absolutely not. I would give it a 4; and that's only for the decor. We were a party of 3 and had made a rezzo. They seated us at the table closest to the host stand-ew. One of the water glasses on the table had LIPSTICK on it; when we pointed it out they just kind of shrugged it off like it was no biggie. I had some kind of generic salad and my friend's was WILTED. The bisque was decent, but whatever. At that point I was so repulsed, I just wanted to leave. Go to the restroon & grab some matches before you leave so you've got a souvenir of the most overpriced pitiful meal you'll ever (hopefully) have to eat.

Ehhh...it's become more of a tourist trap than anything. It's overpriced for what they offer now- food isn't that great and it's filled with your typical backwoods-American-in-the-big-city types. Not my idea of high-end ambiance. I'd give it a 5 or 6...okay food, decent service, but nothing out of the ordinary, and so many tourists!

There are SO many fabulous restaurants in NYC that really will deliver an upscale experience. Tavern isn't one of them, in my opinion.

Tourist Trap all over. Unless you are coming on a bus from another county, don't go here!!

Why not go to Daniel or even better La Grenouille for a very upscale evening.

There are so many better places in the city to choose than that horrendous place!

Have fun..

It's a tourist trap. It's a beautiful spot with medium food at high prices. You go there for the setting not for the food.

It's still a pretty good restaurant and very nicely decorated. I'd give it an 8 out of 10. It's really pricey, though.

I'd also suggest taking a look at the ratings in the Zagat guide.

Maybe a 5. It's a "tourist trap." Not that good. NYCers generally don't go there... Food and service both are fair.
