I had a Yorkshire terrier for fourteen years. She was intelligent, hyper and very sweet. They are really great little animals. The biggest problem I had was with vaccinations. the rabies vaccine almost caused her to die because she was only 5lb. and they give the same size injection for a Yorkshire terrier as they do a German shepherd. They really need to change this law. She was in the hospital for a week after this and I had to get her exempt from further rabies injections. I also had to be very careful with vets because they don't often treat little dogs as gently as they need to be.

They are easy to house break and I had mine trained to use papers as her bathroom.

I think you would be very happy with A Yorkshire terrier. I still miss my little girl who passed away five years ago.

Best wishes

I have a 12 week old yorkie asleep on my couch right now! I was pretty apprehensive at first about a dog. Would I have enough time/money/patience? But now I'm so happy that I have this little guy. I was looking for awhile, and I must say, look for a local breeder. I was able to meet the family, see both parents, all the siblings, and the place they were kept, all the stuff a new mom worries about. I am so glad I have my yorkie. I don't know what I would do without him now!

The Yorkshire Terrier seems oblivious of its small size. It is ever eager for adventure and trouble. This little dog is highly energetic, brave, loyal and clever. Affectionate with its master, but sometimes suspicious of strangers. It can be aggressive to strange dogs and small animals. In other words, it has true Terrier heritage. They do best with older, considerate children. Yorkies are easy to train, although they can sometimes be stubborn. The breed is demanding and dependant and needs a lot of human attention. The Yorkie is an excellent watchdog, defending its territory in no uncertain manner. They can get snappish if surprised, frightened or over-teased, but are usually very sweet and loving. They can be difficult to housebreak. These little dogs should not be over-protected, for they may become neurotic. The Yorkie likes to bark, but it can easily be taught not to do so.

Some Yorkies are prone to bronchitis and early tooth decay, poor tolerance of anaesthetic, and delicate digestion. Exotic treats should be avoided. They sometimes suffer paralysis in the hindquarters caused by herniated disks and other problems of the spine. Falls or knocks can cause fractures of fragile bones. Abnormal skull formations in Yorkies measuring less then 8 inches (20cm). Bitches often have trouble delivering. The very tiny "teacup" Yorkies often have serious health and behavioral problems. Be sure to feed Yorkies dry food (canned food can be added) to help keep their teeth clean and strong. They should get their teeth cleaned at the Vet to keep them from falling out and creating infection.
Living Conditions
The Yorkie is a good dog for apartment life. They are very active indoors and will do okay without a yard. The Yorkie is sensitive to the cold and prefers warm climates.
Exercise
The Yorkshire Terrier is a lively little warrior that does not need a lot of exercise. Although it will benefit from regular opportunities to run and play.
Life Expectancy
About 12-15 years
Grooming
Regular grooming is needed. A clipped coat needs daily to weekly combing and brushing. Topknot is usually tied back with ribbon. Full show coats need hours of grooming. They should have their teeth cleaned regularly. This breed sheds little to no hair.

I've never known a yorkie I didn't like. However, I have a long coat chihuahua and I hear they are very much alike. They do need to be groomed often. My breeder told me to give her Nutri-Cal vitamins daily for a healthy coat, skin and a good appetite. A tube of it costs about $10 and looks like syrup and apparently tastes good cuz my chi really likes it. When/if you go to a breeder have a lot of questions to ask not only for yourself but the breeder likes it when you do - that's how they know you'll be a good owner. Look on the internet - there's tons of info out there.

I would get a girl dog then you can litter train her, or paper train her. Boy dogs have to lift their leg to go pee. I have a friend who's little Yorkie has never set foot on the grass out side. She is litter trained. These little sweeties are so smart and cute. The require a lot of grooming brushing taking to the shop for hair cuts but OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH they are so sweet. My friends dog's name is Little Miss moppet. We call her mop or moppy.Buy from a good breeder. It may cost you more but you will be assured of a good dog. Good luck!

This is a small breed and is very easy to take care of. The only problem that you would have with this breed, is their fur. You can't cut it by yourself, and must groom everyday.

there can be a lot of coat care . you have to brush them daily or have them clip every 6 to 8 weeks. just make sure that you see both parents. When you get a puppy please take to a vet to have a health check. most good breeders will want you to do this.
