You know, things that, during your colored belt testing you just took to doing for whatever reason? Or... am I just very strange?

I know some of my Dojangmates developed these strange rituals, as did I, and one day we were sitting around comparing them. Usually they started with an excellent testing after having done something random and ridiculous.

Ok, this is how strange I am. The following started when I was a whitebelt testing for yellow and evolved in strangeness. Before each testing I ate french onion soup and blasted "Ball and Chain" by Janis Joplin on the way to the Dojang. While, of course, eating a container of tic-tacs to kill the french onion smell. Yes, I did brush but you just cannot kill french onion that easily.

After a bit I outgrew it but I did that, I believe, until redbelt.

I knew better than to eat much or close to testing.

It was half a bowl an hour before the test.

I am not strange, really.

Strange pre-fight rituals most welcome! That one was a dandy ninedemonsgod!

And, of course, yupchagee, martial artists are NEVER strange. ;)

Most rituals I am reading here (except for the shaving... that is odd) have something to do with the martial arts. Mine did not. There was NO logic behind mine.

Oh baconmaster, it is "lynching" not
"linching". Just thought I would lend a helping hand.

Well not test, but before my fight I do have long strange ritual.

Starting a week before my fight, I would start to make sure my days stay the same everyday. For example if I eat at 8 am then go to gym at 11 am then train at 7 pm then go to bed at 11 pm. I would do exactly that everyday until the day of my fight.

On the night before my fight, I would laundry the clothes that I'll be wearing and leave them on chair or table. I would read as much as I could on buddha's teaching before I go to bed.

On my fight day I would sleep as long as I could. Once I'm up I would drink lot of fruit juice and eat scone, biscuit, or something similar. Then I would soak in warm water for a hour in bathtub. Then I would take a long shower, wash every part of my body as slowly as I could. Once that's over I would shave my arms, face, and chest/tummy. Then I would turn water off and stay in shower until all steam is gone. After that I would fix my hair to look as best as I could. Then I would have a huge pasta based lunch before weight in.

I never really developed any rituals. I have never really gotten into the meditation thing, but I would get a mix tape of inspirational music (Theme from Rocky, Let the Bodies Hit the Floor, Shoot to Thrill, stuff like that) and get noise cancelling headphones to let me tune out the outside world. Then I just blast that music and focus on what I'm about to do. The music and headphones helped me block out everything which is pretty much what meditation is for. I wouldn't talk to anyone or help anyone else prepare. I just got myself into a zone.

During my blackbelt test I was so hyper I kicked my sparring partner before the instructor told us to begin. Ooopps , sorry !

As for rituals , I would shadow box in the dojo bathroom for half an hour before testing . I don't know why I used to do that , but that was my only ritual.

never had any rituals before gradings or fights, bit of an extra stretch was about all.i did try the thai rituals but ppl used to look at me like i had 2 heads so i gave it up.the only other rituals i had was to make sure my graders and or opponents knew i wasn't there for a picnic.one of my pet hates is an easy grading or fight.i'm far from the best but whats the point if you dont earn it?

Of course not! Martial Artists are NEVER strange is stupid. How dare you ask such a question.

Everyone knows that it is bad luck to be superstitious.

I hate the thought of Gradings!!!

If you are that good you will be given your grade and not have to do certain things on a certain day!!!
