Just curious how much sirloin costs right now. :) A local Albertson's has a 3.49/lb sale and I have no idea just how much on "sale" that really is...

Well right now its close to $6.00 a pound for USDA Choice beef...but first is this USDA choice beef or is it select? Either one is more than $3.49 a pound, but Select meat is a crappier grade and you won't be saving much if it is. If its Choice beef then you should stock your freezer full because that's a hell of a deal. Some stores grade thier own beef and usually give it a name..some call it blue ribbon beef. Generally those stores that grade thier own use select cuts but call them something different to make people think that they are getting superior quality beef. Select beef is usually leaner and tougher..ok for some cuts but not for steaks, Choice has more marbleing and is more tender overall then select, and Prime which isn't sold in most grocery stores is mostly reserved for restarants and other eateries, is the fattiest but also the most tender. Choice beef is harder and harder to find in regular markets because it is higher priced and everyone is always looking for the cheapest steak possible. I only carry Choice beef in my store. Also at Walmart they pump the meats full of solutions to "beef it up". That means that they put preservatives in your meat that allow it to sit on the shelf longer without turning colors, but when you cook it, the meat loses its weight by about 25%. So you need to look to make sure that you aren't buying meat that has been injected with solution, otherwise from that meat that you are buying you are getting 75% meat, and 25% water. You have to really watch these things when you are buying meats.

If that's for "Prime" or "Choice" it is a really good buy. The best thing to do is really LOOK at the steak - see how well the fat is trimmed (shouln't be more than 1/4") and see if there's any gristle running through it. I noticed alot of "meat snobs" in the previous answers. If all you want is a nice sirloin, that"s a good price!

I live in Iowa, I buy Amana meat from the butcher counter at the grocery store, I usually pay a little over $6.00 per lb. of sirloin steak. If you get a chance try Iowa's Amana meat.

Fillet or rib eye steak is much nicer, sirloin is so cheap and nasty gone.
The price you pay depends on the butcher/supermarket.
Just bear in mind "you pay for what you get"!
The cheaper it is, the nastier it will taste!

How much do *I* pay for sirloin steak? $0. Because I choose not to eat cows for pleasure.
