I'm deploying this spring with 6 years of service, but our new guys coming in haven't gotten enough training either. I and my other experienced collegues will be working side-by-side with the new women and men in our unit. Limited training is caused by poor funding, conflicted scheduling, last minute changes, etc. Sadly, it's very typical, war or no war.
Funding is prioritized to train new special ops & direct combat units. Combat support units, the "backbone" of the force, get less funding always. Bulk of training happens 1 month somewhere before leaving, and its usually a cram course.
The military is definitely stretched thin. My navy is downsizing. My girlfriend's army medical battalion is downsizing. Some friends had to transfer because their unit is disbanding. There is a lot of mergers going on in the military in order to support the war effort. If your son's training was actually cancelled or cut, then could be a scheduling issue. Some officer up top probably said, "Running out of time, send them off now while we can." A lot of military leaders are very concerned about possible funding cuts in the future, so they rush through things quite often before the money runs out, and get ready for the next fiscal year.
Your son will do fine because ultimately, it's teamwork & fellowship on the field that does most of the real training.

Not sure what branch of the service you are speaking of. As a Marine I was in 3 years before I went to Iraq and you can never have enough training for what you see over there!! Second time I went I served with a few greenies that have only been in a less then a year and they were stand up Marines!! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your son and the rest going over. I 'm praying myself I do not go back but if I must then that's my job!!!

EVERY Soldier must complete Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training before deploying.
Sometimes, Soldiers arrive at a duty station and are assigned to a unit that is deployed. They end up catching up to the unit without having gone through all the training the unit has before deploying.
Does it suck? Yes. Is there anything that an be done about it? No, other than hope he learns from those teaching him. That's what noncommissioned officers are for.

I am a mother of an Army soldier & he had 22 months of training.
I think, he might be able to invade a country by himself. Probably not but he is well trained. The military gets more & better training than at any time in history. The exact amount the contract they signed calls for.
Basic training is what it says basic but he he only required to do what his officers tell him to. They teach self defense & firing of all weapons they will use. I will pray for your son & everyone elses sons in Iraq. My son leaves in 2 months.

That's a load of BS. No soldier goes over without having Basic Training and their job training. You should get your facts straight before jumping to conclusions. In fact Basic Training is the only real training you need before going over. He will be fine over there so dont worry. He will get more training over there than he could ever get back here in the states. I went to iraq 2 1/2 months after getting out of my job training (AIT) and I did fine. Just pray alot or whatever it is you do and he will be fine.

Not completed training as in not having finished basic training? Basic training is really the only training that a troop is required to have before being sent out which is typically 8 weeks. If he is being sent out within eight weeks of joining there really is a problem but otherwise there isn't one. Technically everyone is ready to serve overseas after basic training. Other training doesn't necessarily have to be completed before being sent out its just supplementary and of course helpful but not mandated. Again...necessary training, by military rules, is basic training only... anything else is just a bonus. If that's the case well I suppose he is being sent out because the limited amount of troops and the general crisis we are in. Military doesn't exactly operate in the most efficient ways either...they might be doing it just to have bodies there. Sorry if its not comforting but thats how it operates.

Moms worry about their son so much, it's in their nature but remember your little boy is a man now. He made a decision and volunteered to join the military. He chose to be a soldier and all you can do now is pray for his safe return. I pray everyday for our soldiers in harms way. Thank you for having a son who has the courage enough to do what he thinks is right. Your concern for your son and the other soldiers is shared by many Americans. I am with you.

What training are you refering too. I believe you are mistaken. If he's gone through basic then he's fully qualified to be sent over seas. Anyone that doesn't finish basic isn't technically in the military. I believe you are not quite understanding the information or getting all of it.

I know you are upset but I can assure you they get the training that is required, PERIOD! Do not try and belittle what is going on by whining about training. Where was all the training before all this kicked in. Has been going on for 4 years so come on and get real!!!!

he will get more training in Kuwait they wont send him forward if hes not ready the most effective training i got was in Kuwait because when i go to the range here in the states the safety procedures are crippling to effective training but in Kuwait the training still emphasized safety but put it on the individual rather than strict directions here in the states
