I've heard it is from Spain but I've also heard that Hispanic names ending in 's' are usually from Portugal.

I know the surname from Portugal. It is frequent in Spain, too; its etymology is geographic, relating to someone living close to a tower.

It's a Portuguese or Spanish word meaning "towers". So it belonged originally to a Portuguese or Spanish person who lived by/in/near some towers, or a town or village with that name.
