It's the scientific name of a type of yeast.

myces = fungus
saccharomyces (sugar fungus) is a scientific term for common yeast
schizosaccharomyces (splitting sugar fungus) is a genus of yeasts that reproduce by splitting (instead of budding)

The species name is actually spelled "octosporus" and means, eight spores.

It's Greek. Hmmm. schizo=split, saccharo=sweet/sugar, myces=(not sure), octo=eight, porus=holed.

An eight-holed split sugar thing? Sounds scientific...but I don't know what it is.
