Look at J.M.W. Turner landscapes - use link below to see some of his paintings - they are very abstract, impressionist style - you can do this.
Even with the thumbs down - I stand by this - look at them. No other artist gives such a great sense of atmosphere, stormy sky. They break down to quite simple abstracts and colors even though other artists would chew their fingers off to achieve this - you can get an idea for attempting something unique for your class.
And for the thumbs down givers - get real - she's not trying to do an Bierstadt.

i suggest that you look at some of Van Gogh's landscapes, if stormy=vibrant to get inspired for the look of your picture; or even Jackson Pollock. for photos go to yahoo images and type in what you want to find.

Try pop art like Roy Lichtenstein's work, or Jackson Pollock. His work was basicly just throwing paint onto a canvas.

May I suggest a pic of a house? I find straight lines easier and shadowing or highlighting should be easier too. Good Luck!!
