I often have dreams where i fall asleep - well I think I do! But i'm not really asleep. Everything is the same in my bedroom apart from one detail - my bedroom door is always ajar - I fall asleep (so I think) and I wake up and realise something isn't right, something is out of place but I think its ok cos I am awake only next thing someon is standing over me and then tries to smother me I'm screaming and thrashing about (well I think I am but I have asked my parents why they didn't come and help and they have said they have never heard me screaming) Because it is so real I think its happening and then I wake up gasping for breath. Thats just one of my dreams the others are just as bad and I've had these dreams for years! Can you tell me what they're about?

Yes, Night Terrors are very real. They are dreams/nightmares which the person experiencing them perceives to be so real that they have an acute anxiety reaction to them, which then wakes them up. The causes of Night Terrors is varied... from a real threat one has survived (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), a perceived threat (Acute Anxiety), or a chronic fear of a perceived threat (Phobia).

Night Terrors are a treatable combination of psychiatric and sleep disorder. With appropriate psychotherapy, and proper nighttime medication, you will find relief.

And no ... Night Terrors do not mean that you are "crazy" !!!

The years of suffering will come to an end. :)

All my sincere best to you !!! :)

i used to get terrible dreams when i was going through a bad stage in my life and i think that the anxiety brought them on, i used to dream i was being chased and once woke myself up screaming in terror running around my bedroom. Maybe you have some sort of anxiety that brings them on. I hope you get something sorted and your night terrors stop for you.

My son has night terrors and I guess Im a light sleeper as when they start Im right there seeing to him. To all intents he looks awake (but he isnt) sometimes he walks in his sleep to. So far it seems that his stem from anxiety. But for me its the most stressful thing to watch my child scream like a banshee and looking so frightened. Definately real.

They are real enough for the person who suffers from them and I really feel sorry for the people who do. Since they are so regular for you I suggest you see a doctor and ask them to refer you to someone. You cant be getting a good night's sleep suffering like this!
And yet you get people complaining they dont dream? Huh, lucky them!

When I was young I had night terrors, but I was always awake for them... just sort of hallucinating I guess. I grew out of them, but I have always had very gruesome and severe nightmares, so it may just be something natural.
