Jackie. He was a beagle, my grandfather's retired hunting dog.

He'd lost a leg to a trap. My parents and grandparents had bought adjoining wooded 8-acre properties when I was about 2. On one of my grandfather's first hunting trips over the new land, Jackie stepped in an abandoned small animal trap. It was really old and rusty, but it took part of his foot, and he lost the rest of it and the lower part of his leg to infection. He was really lucky to survive. He was only about three or four when this happened. He lived to be 13.

The first dog I remember (I think I was about 5) was FC Amego De Casadero "Mego" (the name means "Friend of the Hunter"). That was in 1946 or there abouts.
And yes, I learned how to clean dog runs before I learned how to walk. ;)

Sabre, a white standard poodle. She had ADD and didn't have two brain cells to rub together (she once ran into a tree), but she was the most empathetic dog I ever knew.

Briar!..Hence my screen name blackbriar. He was a black Lab, runt of the litter and my best/only friend. My dad took me to someone who had a litter of pups. I picked him up and was sold on him after he bit me on the chin. lol Had him 9yrs till the day he died although he did leave behind a son. The one and only time he ever bred and was with my neighbor's yellow lab. Again, I picked the runt and his son was the spittin' image of Briar. Best in the litter as well.
