Like many hard cheeses it does have a very icky smell. But I think it tastes good on spaghetti (it provides a nice taste counterpoint). My mom eats it straight.

It's worth trying (On a nice bowl of pasta). So is sauerkraut (despite the smell), errr, not on the pasta. Try the sauerkraut on hot dogs.

Yes, parmesan cheese actually tastes nice. Most people do not tend to sniff their cheese before they eat them but if they did they might find "great value" cheese does not smell as good as say Cheddar cheese. It's also a cultural thing. If you grew up with it you are probably more inclined to like it because it's been a familiar food in the home. Try some parmesan cheese on pizza or spagetti, it actually tastes quite nice.

Instead of smelling, why not taste?

Parmesean cheese has a nice nutty flavor and goes great on pastas.
