Montserrat and Dominica

In Dominica, where I grew up, mountain chicken is a local delicacy. It is a prized food—and it is a frog.

The mountain chicken, or crapaud (krah-poh), has large legs about the size of chicken wings. With the brown spots on its yellow-green backs and pink on its belly and sides, it cannot be mistaken for an ordinary frog.

Crapauds live in the rain forest that covers the island’s mountains. The frogs are active at night. I remember catching them by shining a light in their eyes. That would daze them, and I could pick them up easily. We could also buy them in bunches at the market.

With a name like ‘Montserrat mountain chicken’ you would be forgiven for thinking this creature is a bird…… in fact it’s a great, big frog! The mountain chicken only lives on the island of Montserrat and Dominica in the Caribbean and Montserrat has suffered from massive volcanic destruction since 1995. Life for the mountain chicken hasn’t been easy in recent years. The existence of this impressive amphibian on the island has become threatened due to the volcanic activity, hunting and a rapid increase in pests such as wild pigs and rats in the forest.

However, Durrell Wildlife has had terrific breeding success with this species in Jersey, revealing the unique aspects of this frog’s behaviour for the first time in history. Thankfully, this means that the mountain chicken now has a more hopeful future, but there is still so much to do. Using the information we have gleaned in Jersey we are now well placed to tackle the frog’s threats in its wild home of Montserrat.

Why is it called a ‘chicken’?

The mountain ‘chicken’ is so-called because its large back legs are something of a culinary delicacy in the region and they apparently taste like chicken. Hunting of the frogs for food has taken place for many years and in itself has not threatened numbers of the mountain chicken.
