I was a youth leader at my church until I was kicked out because one of the kids had a crush on me. She took portions of emails and created a note and gave it to the pastor. I did only one thing in that email that was true. I took her to work one day, after making sure she had permission from her father, who was also a youth leader. Nothing happened. I took her to work, dropped her off, and went back to college.
More recently, I have been trying to get a group of post-high-school students together for fun and games. We've met 3 times and now we can't seem to get together at all. Some quote scheduling conflicts. I think it has to do with the fact that my church is turning into the type of place no one wants to go to have fun.
The most recent event is a game night. I was going to charge people $2.00 admission to help support our group. However, the pastor thinks that because games are involved, it would be gambling. I'm done with this church! Do you think I'm right?

good for you... you are a leader type, not a follower... a sheep if you will. Religion is man made anyway, so go out and create your own... have the sheep fallow you.

I think in todays society there is so much media coverage of child molestation involving church officials that the church is getting a phobia and could possibly be over reacting. Yes there should have been questions asked and proof that you were innocent.
Second when kids get Middle school age it isn't cool to go to church, so they pull away from religion and turn to more worldly events. If you want to keep pre-teen and teen age kids involved you have got to make it hip and fun or you will loose them to the world.
Third gambling is when someone is betting on something and the winner takes the pot. To charge a donation and use the money to support a church based youth group is not gambling to me.

You should have been believed as the youth leader. I'm sorry, you were not trusted.
Your Church seems to have lost it way. Please gambling? Your killing me right? They truly have missed the message.
I'm a Christian who has no church for some of the insane things you speak of.
I'm meeting with a Bible study group and it has been one of the best experiences I've ever had. Church was meant to mean a group of Christians, not the brick and mortar it has become.
Don't give up, find something new to work on. You will find a group that will meet your needs.

Actually yes I do. It is sad that churches come to this. My youth group years ago was banned from using the silverware. I never went back. Sometimes church gets in the way of belief. LEFTY

I agree with you. If I were still a believer, I would try to find a church without all the uptight issues that seem to accompany this one. Personally, I can find groups and organizations that allow socializing without the need for it to affiliated with any church.

Yes. Even my church allows its members to play games, even on the church grounds. And as for that incident with the girl, the church should investigate BOTH sides of the argument, not just HER side, in order to be fair and just.

If it's no good, skip it and start over. Church shouldn't be some place you go to feel criticized or ostracized or whatever. No one place has a monopoly on truth--find someplace you like better if you can't work stuff out (but try working stuff out first.)

One needs to be very careful working with kids. I think you meant well. I don't think you should leave the church because of this; there's no wrong in having a little fun within a church organization however the important thing is your faith in God within that organization.
Now hurry back to church, submit to God and let fun be secondary.

Follow your gut. Sometimes things get difficult for a reason. Perhaps there's some other route you need to take. Go with the flow.
