what does one give to a tae kwon do master who is going away?

When I had to move from a five minute walk to my studio to a more than one hour subway ride away, my Kwanjangnim was really worried that the commute would be too much. There are studios on every block here, and I think he would have forgiven me had I switched studios.

I wrote him a letter explaining why I wanted to stay at his studio and with him. I had a friend translate it. I gave it to him and although we only ever talked around the letter, I know he appreciated it.

As a teacher, I have kept every student-written letter I've rec'd.

It's not the exact same circumstance, but it's something to consider. You could write him (her?) a letter detailing what you've learned from him, wishing him luck on his new endeavors, etc.
