Six to eight gunmen — possibly heading for Mexico with drug money — approached a group of Tennessee National Guard troops at an overnight observation post Jan. 3 on the U.S. side of the Arizona-Mexico border. No one fired a shot, and the confrontation ended when American troops retreated to contact the Border Patrol. The gunmen then fled into Mexico.

If this did happen its inexcusable. I am a veteran and we may avoid firing shots if possible when guarding something, but run? Hell no, just ridiculous

We pay the National Guard to do what the President tells them to do. They are being used as the eyes & ears of the border patrol to keep drugs, terrorist & illegals out of our country. They do not fire unless in direct danger, they notify the border patrol who has the legal right to fire within the border boundaries.

Imagine if the Guard fired & hit someone on the other side of the border. What a political nightmare for our country.

Shots fired can escalate border violence. A lot of mexican drug cartels are armed enough to start a little war on the border whenever they want. The guard did fine, though just not very tasteful in keeping the peace.

The Guardsmen's mission was to observe, report and remain undetected.

Note the words: "remain undetected."

Kind of hard to remain undetected if you are firing automatic weapons.

Besides - these troops were to well disciplined to get in a firefight with people who could have been fellow law-enforcement for all they knew.

First we have people complaining about how 'trigger-happy' American troops are. And when they do not shoot they are called cowards. Sounds to me like you have made sure that they will lose no matter what they do.
