I went in recently for a routine op and they took a blood sample for 'routine tests'. Just wondered what they were. Have not heard anything so I assume all is ok? Would they have told me if they were not?

Routine tests pre-op basically involves looking at your blood counts, to make sure your HB ( indicators of anaemia) and white counts ( indicator for possible infection) are OK. It is risky doing surgery if your HB is too low, and if you have an infection you might need antibiotics. Then they also look at your kidney function and liver functions, it is just routine, the anaesthetist need to know these things, but it is quite expensive testing for infections, so it is not routinely done. Then if you are on any blood thining drugs, or having a major op, they will check your clotting profile, just to make sure your blood will clot ok. If there is any abnormality you will be informed and managed accordingly, so if you have not heard anything, you a ok for the surgery and I won't worry about it. The test results should be out the same day or the day after the bloods were taken, and then it can take a day or two for a doc to look at it. If something dramatic is wrong, the lab usually phones a doc to look at it straight away. Bye the way it is illegal to test for Aids without your written consent and it is not supposed to be done unless you have been counseled about it and given your consent, so don't worry about it. If you are concerned about Aids, speak to your GP, they can arange to test you.

My best friend is a phlebotonist (takes blood) at the hospital they do test all routine blood for Hiv etc but its only for national statistics is done anonymously unless you request for a certain type of blood test such as an Hiv test the reason being that if a person puts themselves at risk of hiv and theres a chance it may be positive you are usually required to attend a councelling session, pregnancy is different as any diseases could affect the baby bloods are usually taken between 7-9 weeks and then again at 30 wks looking for anything that may affect the baby such as stds hiv and certain blood groups then it would be necassary to tell you if anything was wrong

Yes.

IF a Doc has said they are taking the sample for routine tests these are the typical blood imbalance indicator tests that can either help them rule out certain problems realevant to your admission...or identify things that may need further investigation...

They may also use some of the sample for general analyses...in which case supposedly the sample is anoynmized so if they are taking test for HIV for statistics purposes they would not know if was yours/whose it was (NOT traceable back to you).

It relies upon on what kinds of assessments that a doctor orders. in case you have the "hardship-unfastened" issues ordered, like a chemistry panel which measures your electrolytes, glucose, and your kidney function, it ought to tell some illnesses like particular kidney illnesses, diabetes, and assorted others. additionally, in case you have a CBC (finished blood count huge variety with differential) that may point out many distinctive problems from an infection to leukemia, besides as many others. there's a plethora of assessments which may well be ordered, you're able to desire to be attentive to what's being ordered on you and why, additionally, you desire those try consequences defined to you in a manner which you would be able to comprehend, so don't be afraid to invite questions.

They DO NOT test for aids then just ring u and tell u later. You must believe me i am a trained nurse they dont do it without a request. You were tested for things relavent to your condition only like a FBC full blood count, maybe thyroid, fasting lipids. kidney function. etc, no aids dont even give it a second thought. Listen get the number of your PCT and ask them to put your mind at rest. x Please forget it. Anyone who says different doesnt know.
