Yes I believe a "religious belief" can change someone from good to bad. Religion per se is man's idea of how to reach God. Man's religious beliefs (his own ideas) lead him to do some really bad things (like the crusades). That wasn't God's idea it was man's. There is no need for man to "reach God" through his own ideas. God has already reached to us. People need a new nature, not just a change of mind - they need to be truly "new." That only comes from asking the Lord Jesus into your heart - then you are a "new creation in Christ" - wants change, desires change, understanding changes. It is not just "turning over a new leaf" its emerging from the caterpillars cocoon to be a flying butterfly. A new life, a new heart, a new mind! There is nothing else like it! A real, living relationship with Almighty God through Jesus Christ....that is what prevents man's religious belief from changing a person from good to bad. Christ talks to His "new creation" and says things like, "don't do that - that's not like me" or "I died for that person who is rejecting me now - I love them so much" and that causes you to love them too. A relationship is about communication, and sharing, and in Christ it takes it to a new level in that we become more like Him each day in love, forgiveness, assurance, hope, faith, and power to change ourselves into His image!

You know, that's a good question. I think that (let's use an example) if a person whose religion was X and there was another person whose religion was Y...maybe based on X's religion he thinks that the beliefs of Y is bad and that it is leading him from good to bad. But I think that somebody can only answer this based on their religion and how they see others...does that make sense?

Well, not exactly. But it can give a person the desire to become a better person- at least that is what it did for me. I have to work hard at it every day- at being non-judgemental, forgiving, compassionate, slow to anger, considerate of others' feelings, understanding. My family and friends tell me that I am much easier to get along with than I used to be, and I do not cause my parents worry and grief like I used to. I try to make positive contributions to the world, instead of being a source of negativity. I am much happier than I used to be. I am still far from the kind of person that I would like to be, but at least I am moving in that direction.

If I embraced a theory that expressed my character and self, i might have become a nihilist. that is my nature to sense that each and all and sundry is hopeless and meaningless. faith in Christ continuously attracts me faraway from that to something greater effectual, to a theory that folk do rely---warts and all--and that what I do as a guy or woman has an result upon the universe. And, that no rely how undesirable issues are actually, there is something in action which will deliver us to a greater effectual realm and place than we are able to think of now, the two as persons and a species. although, i ought to work out a guy or woman making the argument that me being interested in Christianity develop into expression of the area of myself that struggled against nihilism, regardless of out understanding that area of me existed.

Ask my ex brother in law that someday. He'll tell you it did and then end up in prison again. Religious belief doesn't turn a person from bad to good but it sure makes them look good to the parole boards.

God can change a person's whole life when he chooses to listen to what God has said is truth, asks God to forgive the sin in his life, and chooses Jesus and his death to take his place. God provided that for him...but it is a choice of who you will serve. God or yourself and your own way.
When that choice is made, you also choose to start listening to God because sin is disobeying Him...and He gave us His Word, the Bible to help us grow as we learn what He has to say.
That can bring amazing changes in people. A good example of that is the girl in prison that was on death row..Karla...something....who had done these terrible killings and then became a Christian in prison. Her life totally changed...she just loved everybody...won many to Christ....there was just no doubt she was now a different person...but society said she had to pay for what she had done...and she did. She went from a "bad" person to a "good" one....and it was God that changed her.
But the Bible says "there is none righteous...no not one"...we all have sinned and come short....but God can change everything!
There are many examples of changed lives.

Not in his mind.
For example, the devout Christian who blew up the bombs at the Atlanta Olympics and several gay bars did so because of his religious beliefs but, to him, they made him a good martyr, not a bad person.
Similarly, the abortion clinic bombers and shooters see themselves as doing good and a number of religious believers agree with them.
The People's Temple (a semi-Christian affiliate of the Disciples of Christ) led the mass suicide at Jonestown in the name of their belief. The deaths of the Branch Davidians at Waco were in the name of faith.
Good and bad are relative terms.

Nope. You can believe in a religion, but still be considered bad. A person needs to effect positive change in their life under their own steam.

Christian experience has little to do with religions and it is Jesus via the comforter lives inside a true believer and this changes ones motives. Religion as a rule perverts this new energy.

YES..........Religion is a very sophisticated, complex, and a mystery to most folks. Confusion, weakly religious backgroung, low morals, and a don't care attitude, because being sinful is an easy way to go, comitting sin is so very easy to do. Bad is easy, doing Good is hard to accomplish. Doing GOOD is not confusing, is not complex....I think. Pray, pray, pray, pray........
