Because that is what they are taught by the leaders/prophet of the church. When I was a Mormon, I was assured of getting into heaven by repenting and being baptized...but not to the highest kingdom in heaven, unless I did good works. (yes, supposedly, there are three kingdoms in Heaven...Terrestrial, Telestial and Celestial-the highest) Where does the Bible teach that??? No where.

Here is an analogy for you, since there are already some really good answers here. When a child gets ready to enter school for the first time, there is a lot of preparation. Usually the parent(s) help them get ready, and they have to continue to help supporting the child through school. Once the child graduates from elementary school, most adults would NOT say, "Okay, you're done with school now. You are completely ready for life and what grown-ups do. You have an education, so now just do what you want to do." There is still more education to come, with middle school/junior high, high school, and even college. If you have been baptized, it means that you are living on the minimum level necessary to be worthy of being saved. But you can't stop there. It is important to develop character, to learn to be consistent with how we apply the principles of obedience and service, and just as children continue to learn more from year to year, so all true Christians must learn more and mature in principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It doesn't mean Jesus' forgiveness is conditional on how many good works we do - it just means that as children of God we are required to continue growing and serving Him and our brothers and sisters. Have a happy day, and I send you two gummy bears.

There seem to be a misunderstanding of our belief in your part.
Let me explain.
Adam's transgression brought about two things
1. Physical death
2. Spiritual death- driven out from the presence of God the Father.
Jesus Christ saved us by Grace from the two deaths that mentioned above.
We believe that through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, all man kind, good or bad will be resurrected, and they will have the opportunity to repent and a chance to return to God the Father again.
This is what we meant by being "saved"
Being saved does not mean "Exaltation" which means to advanced to be like God. That is why James wrote "Faith without work is dead" he implied we have to do our part.
Faith in Christ and Baptism , Repentance, are the basic requirements, yet if one wants to advanced to be like God, we must work in righteousness until the end.

Yeah, mormons have some interesting beliefs, but so do other Christians too. I mean, what's up with those snake handlers? And if they are going to mess around with snakes, why not do it with a non-poisonous one at least??? I've known many Mormons and they are all good-hearted people. Their faith makes this country better and we should all be thankful to have them here.

Maybe because the have better since the chirstians. You do have to continue to do what Jesus did when he was here. Keep Gods laws go to church on the correct day of the week and it is not sunday. I must say they have a better understanding the most christians. At least they no that they are not yet saved. That is correct according to the bible. You should read it and pray for understanding. Your salvation depends on it.

Because they believe that the Lord revealed it through scripture and through his prophets.
How does it help you to come here and bash the beliefs that someone else holds so dearly.
Let me ask you this- Are Mormons really hurting anything, besides beer sales? I think you would discover that the answer is NO.

It is due to modern revelation we believe it is only through repentace and obedience to the laws of the gospel that a person can obtain exaltation in our Heavenly Father's highest kingdom, the Celestial.
We believe it is after we have done all we can do, that Christ will make up the difference for us, and it will be different for everyone.
It all comes down to interpretation, everything we believe is contained in the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price. They all go hand in hand together in testament of the gospel and of Jesus Christ. You or your pastor may interpret them differently than the prophets of our church...why do you think there are SO many different religions?
Polkadot - there are references to the different Kingdoms in the bible - and references to 'celestial or terrestrial" bodies...
1 Corinthians 15, Chapter heading
Christ died for our sins—He rose from the dead and was seen by many—All men will be resurrected—Paul speaks of baptism for the dead—The three degrees of glory—Victory over death comes through Christ.
40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.
The same as the sun, moon, and stars differ in glory from one another, so do the Celestial, Terrestrial and Telestial differ in glory...

It's a works-based righteousness, the complete opposite of what Holy Scripture teaches. And their Jesus is the spirit brother of Lucifer, and their God is one of many Gods, who was once a man...and they hope to become Gods someday, too....with their own planets and their own celestial wives who will be eternally pregnant to populate the new planet.
Ask your local LDS "elder" to explain next time they knock on your door.
