My son is going on 19 months and he doesn't say anything besides eh when he points at everything. I mean he babbles all the time. He used to have a binky in his mouth throughout the day and when we went to his 18 month appt the doc said to take it away from him. So I took it away during the day and just give it to him at night. He used to say mama and dada and doggy all of the time and now he doesn't say anything. He just points and even when we tell him what it is then hand it to him he still doesn't say anything. I am a sahm and talk to him all the time. I tell him what I am doing and tell him what we are going to do and just tell him what things are I read to him everyday and he still doesn't say anything. But he responds to me when I tell him to do something. I can tell him to go get his cup and he will go and get it and bring it back to me. He knows what I am talking about and what i am saying. The doc wants to get a hearing test done.. which I don't understand why if he listens..

coninued from question.. like i said he listens to me and does exactly what I ask him to.. i tell him its time to brush his teeth he will run and get his toothbrush and toothpaste and wait for me, if i tell him its bath time he comes to me and lifts his arms up so i can take of his clothes then points at his diaper so i will take it off also then runs to the tub to get in. So I don't know if somthing might be wrong or not. I mean he doesn't say anything anymore.. just eh eh eh.. that is all i get... when did your toddlers start talking? Should I be worried.. i have another appt with the doctor on the 12th and will be scheduling his hearing exam tomorrow... I don't know if he is just waiting to talk or if he just doesn't feel like it or there is something wrong.. has anyone else dealt with this situation before... i know i asked this question before.. but everyone just told me when their kids starting talking.. no one gave me real advice... thanks a bunch

Kids will talk when they are ready. I don't believe that your son is having any problems. He sounds like he is very smart and he knows what is going on. He isn't ready to start talking just yet. Keep up what you are doing. Talk to him and read to him and try asking him questions and stuff. My son is 3 1/2 yrs old and everyone used to tell me that he was having problems because he wasn't talking as well as all the other kids but he is as smart as a whip. He just didn't want to. Now he is as good as all the other kids. He will talk when he is ready. Keep up the good work.

Sounds like the exact same pattern that my son had. He was saying words, truck, dog, mama, dada, etc and then right around 18 months, he stopped. I contacted my local children's services agency for a free evaluation. If your child qualifies, he will receive free speech therapy until 3 years of age (at least that's how it is here in California). My son received free in-home therapy once a week (they did a hearing test too and it came back normal) and is now in a special preschool to help his speech (he'll be 4 in April). Now he's a chatterbox and won't be quiet! :) but he still has letters and sounds that he can't pronounce so I'll have to find out what options I have for the next year until he starts kindergarten and might qualify for therapy through the school district.

My son was having the same issue. He is the youngest of four and simply wasn't talking the way I felt he should be for his age (he'll be three in March). I contacted my county health department and they provided me with free evaluations. The folks came to our home. He received a psychological evaluation, a speech evaluation as well as a hearing test (that we had to go do outside our home). The slight delay was enough for him to receive a special education teacher and a speech therapist. Both come to our home twice a week for 45 minutes. In four months, we have noticed a dramatic difference! In our county, the services will end the day before his third birthday. Then the public school takes over with preschool special education. We are currently awaiting a program recommendation.

I think parents instincts never fail. If you are concerned, find out if your town's health department offers such services. Your pediatrician can help. If he/she doesn't share your concerns, find someone who does.

Among people I know there is a huge variation in the age that our children have begun speaking. Some of the older ones have been beyond their third birthday before they say anything.
Because your son used to talk but no longer does, it might be reassuring to investigate further. If you don't believe that the hearing test is necessary for your son, perhaps you could speak further with your doctor, explainging how you feel and perhaps gain a second opinion from another Dr.

First of all as far as doctors go only listen to them on health problems. My son had a binky until he was 6.It is a form of security. So he might not be talking because he's lost his security...Also I have known kids to suck their thumbs until in their teens because their binky was taken away. You might want to test him for everything just to be sure. But u need to stop thinking doctors know all and start going by your instincts.Good luck
