It is a celebration to mark the departure of someone. Farewell parties take place when people leave to move to another place, so that they can say goodbye to their friends. It is normal to have a farewell party at work when somebody retires or leaves to go to another job.

Do didn't watched the movie SOUND OF MUSIC, when all the kids were going to bed, they sang;
"Fareweel, goodbye, adios....".
It's a goodbye party
