If money is a problem, look for shops that will give you a free estimate. Most will.

You could buy a code reader that hooks up to the little connector that is located around where the drivers knee goes. But then you'd have to take it somewhere to get it fixed anyway.

I never heard of a "dummy light". (but i've seen a lot dummy answerers)

There are many situations that would cause a engine light to turn on. It could be anything, best way to find out for sure is by going to a Ford dealership and have the mechanics look at the car and have the code pulled (meaning they will plug a computer into the car and specific codes will be displayed, telling the the mechanic what the possible problem/problems are).

If you know someone that has one and can do that for you, than thats another good (cheaper) way to go.

If you want to pull the codes yourself, you can always go to a local parts store and see if they have a code reader, most of them do, and with a deposit they will let you borrow it. Follow the instructions that comes with the booklet and then you will be able to diagnose what the problem is with your vehicle.

Any one of the sensors the computer monitors returning a signal out of the parameters it is expecting to see. If could be something as simple as as a loose fuel cap to something as complicated as a plugged catalytic converter. Take it in and have them put it on the scanner to read the error codes. Then you will know rather than be guessing.

lol.... many things can, sadly. It could be as simple as the oxygen sensor reading things not quite where they should be, to a mass airflow sensor error, to many many other possibilities. Talk to your dealership, and simply ask for a quote to get a diagnostic run and pull the codes for your car. That can then tell you what problems there may be, and you can get estimates from the dealership for the repairs. Good luck.

A whole boatload of things. If you want to try and tackle this one buy yourself a handheld code reader at autozone or pepboys and see what code it gives you. But then you still have to find out what that code means and how to fix it. Save yourself the headache and take it to a shop so they can deal with it.

your local auto zone will run a free computer diagnostic on your car and tell you what the problem is without spending hundreds of dollars on unnecessary parts.
