i have never taken abilify; but i have taken seroquel and i really hated that stuff. all seroquel did for me was make me sleep~and when i WAS able to stay awake, all i did then was cry.

my husband was prescribed seroquel and there were the bad sexual side effects that go with most anti psychotic drugs~not to mention the fact that he wet the bed constantly while on seroquel, and didn't even know that he had wet the bed.

i looked up the abilify and these are the facts that i was able to find (in reference to patients with bipolar disorder):

..."Will ABILIFY make me feel sleepy or tired?
If you're like many people with Bipolar I Disorder, you may worry that medicine will make you feel sleepy or "flat," or cause you to lose your "edge" and be less productive. In clinical trials, 12% of patients on ABILIFY felt sleepy or tired vs. 8% of patients on placebo (sugar pill). You may not feel tired. But you should not drive or operate hazardous machinery until you know how ABILIFY affects you.

Will ABILIFY make me gain weight?
On average, people who took ABILIFY in clinical studies for 3 weeks did not gain weight. The proportion of patients who gained weight (based on gaining 7% or more of body weight) was 3% for ABILIFY compared with 2% for patients treated with placebo.

Does ABILIFY affect sexual function?
Some medicines for Bipolar I Disorder can affect sexual function by raising the level of a hormone called prolactin in your body. In clinical studies, ABILIFY did not elevate prolactin levels.

Will ABILIFY affect my blood sugar or cholesterol?
In clinical trials, blood sugar and cholesterol levels were similar between patients taking ABILIFY and those taking placebo. .

What other common side effects should I know about?
In clinical studies comparing ABILIFY (aripiprazole) with placebo for treating Bipolar I Disorder, some people experienced side effects. The most commonly observed adverse events associated with ABILIFY (reported by 5% or more of ABILIFY patients and more than twice as often as placebo patients) were: an inner sense of restlessness or need to move (akathisia), constipation, and accidental injury.

Other common side effects are: headache, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, upset stomach, sleepiness, lightheadedness, vomiting, and tremor.

Overall, the percentage of people discontinuing ABILIFY because of side effects was similar for patients treated with ABILIFY (11%) and patients treated with placebo (9%).

so i don't know from personal experience, but the data looks good that abilify might be an easier drug to be on than seroquel.

of course each individual is going to react in their own way to ANY drug, so you have to talk to your prescriber and see what the two of you come up with.

good luck

Seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic drug that is used to treat hallucinations, delusions and confusion caused by psychotic conditions such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Atypical antipsychotics are not SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) or benzodiazepines. Atypical antipsychotics like Seroquel affect only certain parts of the brain, blocking the input of serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, histamine, and muscarine. The benefit to atypical antipsychotics is that they are non-habit forming and are not as frequently abused as normal antipsychotics.
Some less serious side effects of Seroquel are dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, constipation, dry mouth and weight gain. More serious side effects are allergic reactions that are revealed through breathing problems, swelling of throat, lips, tongue or face, and hives. Other effects are spastic movements of limbs and face or fever, muscle rigidity or irregular heartbeats. However, serious side effects of Seroquel include pancreatitis, hyperclycemia, stroke and being three times as likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
Also, some patients on Seroquel have developed Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS). While the mortality rate for those with NMS has decreased, it is still a serious condition that results in respiratory failure, cardiovascular collapse, myglobinuric renal failure, arrhythmias, rhabdomyolysis, pneumonia, seizures or diffuse intravascular coagulation.

It really depends on the severity of autism. I have done work with autisic people and they have been on Seroquel or Risperdal, Seroquel has less severe side effects but, agitation, anxiety and insomnia are all side effects. The same side effects are in Risperdal only not as severe.

Despite clinical trials, each person's response to psych medication is individual. A drug well tolerated by me may make you very ill, or just not work the way we want.
Go to the FDA website and look at the drug information: it's written in lay language. You can also look up clinical trials on the National Institutes of Health website.

They are completely different drugs and work differently on all people so you cannot say which one is better or has less side effects. It all depends on which one works best for that person for what it is prescribed for.
