Apparently just having an HDMI connector is not enough anymore. You have to have an HDCP compliant HDMI connector! It sounds like your HDTV does not have an HDCP compliant HDMI input. Check with the manufacturer of your set. There may be a firmware upgrade that takes care of this problem.

That's odd. I didn't think HDCP affected anything but blu-ray... I also didn't think they made HDTVs that had HDMI ports that didn't support HDCP... HDCP is a form of copy protection, like Macrovision. The basic idea is that if the signal you're trying to watch is encrypted with HDCP, both the source port (the HDMI port on the cable box) and destination port (the HDMI port on your TV) must support HDCP. Otherwise, an error is displayed. I've never heard of a cable company broadcasting with HDCP. Try calling them up and see if maybe there's a glitch with your cable box or something. Even if there isn't be sure to plainly (but calmly) voice your displeasure with having your legitimate TV usage disrupted in this manner. If the cable company can't work out a solution with your TV and HDMI, you'll have to go back to component video cables. No loss there. Most HD programming is only in 720p, with a very few channels broadcasting in 1080i or better. Component video supports 1080p but most TVs only support up to 1080i with it and only do 1080p via HDMI.

It means you TV doesn't support HDCP, or High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection. Your cable box won't output a signal because without HDCP the signal could be copied, to a DVD or other recording device. Basically, its yet another way for the media outlets to control what you do with your media. Theres not really a fix for this. You'll have to go back to component video cables. But do not fear, since HD TV is only broadcast at 720p, you really aren't missing anything by not having an HDMI cable.

Try again
Power off both the TV and the set-top and retry.
Unless it is an old HDTV, I doubt it does not support HDCP.
Some old HDMI chips are very peculiar.
The problem can actually be with the set-top box as much as with the TV itself.

Verify with the TV manufacturer (or look at the specs) that the TV is HDCP compliant. An older set may not have that feature. If the TV is HDCP compliant, call the cable company and report the problem.

thats is an odd error usally that means you have a tv that doesn't like the cable you have. you can go and get a differnet tv or there is sometimes another place to hook up the cable on the tv. try pluging the tv ina different way. it also depends on how much knowledge you have about electronics and stuff it will help if you know more
