Play online for free. Most of the major sites offer play money games. See the link for a list of them.

Buy a good beginners books. There are plenty out there. There is a beginners section on the web site I told you about.

When you play with your friends, just play tight. This means only play pocket pairs, or any two cards that in black jack would add up to 20 or more. If you face a big raise and you don't have much in the pot, fold unless you have AA, KK, QQ, AK.

Play online at a free place like Yahoo games or MSN games. You'll play against live people and learn good techniques.

You came to the right place, just read my answer:

In Texas Holdem, each player is dealt two cards, their pocket cards. Typically you want your cards to be paired or suited. The best pocket hand is two aces, however two royal cards suited is also very strong.

If you play with blinds, then one person plays the roll of small blind, and always bets first after the first round. the small blind is equal to half of the minimum bet. The next person is the big blind, and the big blind is the minimum bet. in the first round of betting he goes last. In No-Limit Texas holdem you may bet as much as you want, but in Pot-limit texas holdem there is a maximum bet you can place, and you have to bet in intervals. On yahoo im pretty sure you always have a pot limit

Once the first round of betting has finished, the dealer burns a card (discards it. just put it off to the side) and then puts three cards face-up. This is called the Flop. Another round of betting occurs.

After the second round of betting, the dealer burns another card, and then places only one card face up to join the flop. This Fourth card is referred to as the Turn. Another round of betting occurs

After the turn, and the betting, the dealer burns one final card, and flips one final card. This final card is called the River. Another round of betting occurs.

After this round of betting, those still in the hand show their two pocket cards. Using at least 3 cards in the Community, which is the Flop, the Turn, and River combined (ie the flop could be K, Q, then 5, the turn could be a 6, and the river could be another K. the community is K, Q, 5, 6, K) You may use four or five cards, but in the case that you use five cards, most likely there is a draw. Anyway, use your pocket cards with the community to make the best possible 5 card poker hand. any card in the community is available to all players in the hand, so everyone could the Ace of Hearts if they wanted. The player with the best 5 card combination wins.

Here is a list of poker hands, starting with the best hand and going down:

Royal Flush: A straight Flush that includes an Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and a Ten. (example: Ace of Hearts, King of Hearts, Queen of Hearts, Jack of Hearts, Ten of Hearts.)
Straight Flush: 5 Consectutive suited cards. Pieces of the royal flush can be used, but it is only a Royal flush if all 5 pieces are there. (example of a straight flush: 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 of spades)
4 of a Kind: 4 cards of the same value plus a kicker (a kicker is a high card but it isnt usually used in texas holdem for a four of a kind. an example of a four of a kind is 4 aces and any other card)
Full House: Both a Three of a Kind and a separate pair. (example three aces and two kings. in the case of two full houses the higher three of a kind wins. in the case that the three of a kind is the same then it goes to the pair. if thats a tie then split the pot.)
Flush: 5 cards of the same suit (ex 4, 5, 7, 9, 10 of clubs)
Straight: 5 consectutive value cards (ex Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten, any suits)
Three of a Kind: also known as a set or trips, this is three of the same card. highest three of a kind in the case of a tie wins. if thats a tie go to the kickers. (example three 6s, a king and an ace.)
Two Pair: Any two different pairs. Highest pair wins, so if you have two aces and two twos, and your opponent has two kings and two queens, you win
One Pair: 2 of a kind (ex two aces, a king, a queen, and a jack)
High Card: If you have to sink this low you probably lost

buy books, guides, and learn how to play online for free. i don't recommend online poker if you are going to play in real life later because for most players, even me, its totally different. but online poker is grea for just learning rules. a great way to learn poker strategys is, if you can find it, buy a poker deck called poker for dummies(not the book), and it tells you on every card what good choices would be if the card is accompanied by a certain card.

House rules. Who ever is running the game makes the call. Who ever doesn't like it shouldn't play.
