For a thank you gift, I would recommend something really special that truly recognizes your gratitude.

It's so hard to pick a memorable table wine because people have such varied personal tastes, and then there is the complicated issue of food and wine pairing.

When I am giving a gift, I go with dessert wines. That really impresses people. Even those who rarely drink wine will often appreciate a well made dessert wine. Plus it has wide appeal.

Personally, I'm a huge Sauternes fan. A half bottle (375 mL) of a really good Sauternes should cost you between $40 and $60. The 2001 and 2003 vintages were excellent and should be available.

Examples:
Chateau Lamothe Guignard
Chateau Guiraud
Chateau Suduiraut
Chateau Coutet (which is actually from Barsac, next door to Sauternes. This outscored a bunch of premiers crus in the 2003 vintage and is a great value).

If your budget is lower, look out for Chateau Roumieu, a perennial good value in the $20 range for 375 mL.

Cheers!

If she likes white wine, please do not insult her with a bottle of White Zinfandel, unless you know she enjoys it. Aside from the fact that its usually under $6, it's just not great wine.

How much are you looking to spend? If you are looking at $10-$20, I would look for one of the following:

Kendall Jackson RESERVE Chardonnay
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Marlborough
Hess Collection Chardonnay
Reuscher Haart Reisling
Toasted Head Chardonnay
Maryhill Viognier
Husch Sauv Blanc or Chardonnay

I am not a wine expert. But a wine expert said the best thing to know about wines was to drink the wine that tasted the best to me.

First of all you do NOT have to spend a lot of money to get a good tasting wine.

2nd the taste of wine, - like most things, can be an acquired taste, which is maybe why more people strart with the lighter, sweeter, fruitier varietials like Zinfindels, Chardonays, Pinot Noirs, and sparkling wines like Asti Spumanti. As their palate developes, the penchant for sweet wine usuall wanes, and they turn towards dryer more mellow wines, with more body - Savignon Cabinerts, Melots, Etc

So, find a wine shop that regularly has a wine tasting sale, and go to the wine tasting (No you won't get intoxicated)., try different wines at their suggestion, - telling them before hand about your goal, and then make your selection.

Sorry if I mis-spelled any of the wines I mentioned above, and good luck.. (Oh one last thing - not to be a wine snob, but generally the wine you are looking for as a gift will have a cork in it, as opposed to a twist off cap)

I'm pulling for you

If you like this woman your number one concern is getting a nice bottle. Don't go for the 5 dollar bottle i would suggest something between 15 and 30 dollars that looks nice. Most people don't know wine and wouldn't be able to differentiate between good and great wine. The key to the bottle is to make sure you are going to drink it with her.

Most ladies prefer something soft, not so dry. Try a Chardonnay or a White Zinfandel. I know that Riesling (specifically from Chateau St. Michelle) is a nice choice – not expensive. Why not thank her by taking her to a Winery as a date, see what she likes, then send her a bottle later?

If she likes white get her a Chardonnay. You can't go wrong there unless you get the cheapest bottle around.
