What I mean is when they order a round of drinks, people often order one drink at a time instead of telling the barman the whole round.

customers are crap, that's why. and they think that if you work behind a bar or counter of any type, you must be thick as two short planks. this, i know from experience, is not true and most good bartenders will be able to remember not one, but TWO or even more drinks if you tell them!!!!

Because there is no point in ordering something you do not yet require!? It would be a waste of money, the second drink would be warm by the time you get to drink it and you might not want or need another drink. If you are talking about alcoholic drinks then it gives you the opportunity to pace yourself.

Probably because you only DRINK one drink at a time... what's the point of ordering 4 at once and drinking the last 3 warm, or flat, or watered down???

You can only drink one at a time. If you ordered more than one, the second one would get warm; if it had ice in it the ice would dilute the drink; if the drink had soda in it, the soda would lose its fizz.
Of course, if you drink quickly having more than one at once isn't a problem!

coz people only have 2 hands and often don't want to spend a long time in each bar, so only get one drink to enable them to move onto the next bar, they can go get another one if they choose to stay

because the barmen around here are a bit simple! If you tell them more than one thing at a time they will only forget so you have to say it again and again. It is a technique I have developed to save my voice.
