You can't paint the marble. It's not porous at all so it won't hold the paint well. Your best best is to remove the marble if you really want it gone bad or try putting a paneling over it if you're on a budget.

I had marble on the hearth and surround of my fireplace. It was really ugly and soot stained. I removed the hearth and put down ceramic tile. on the surround, I roughed up the surface with a grinder, then applied ceramic tile over it. I dont know how well paint will adhere to marble. you could try roughing up the surface gloss a bit, then applying a top quality primer with very good adhesion ability. then 2 coats of paint. I think it would look alright if you paint carefully to avoid drips and globs. better to apply 2 or 3 thin coats than 1 heavy coat; this will give you a more even texture and better adhesion. I think spray paint would probably give the best results. You could even apply a sandstone texured paint that would look much better than regular paint.colored stucco would look nice too.

I personally don't think painting a marble fireplace would look good. You could always try it on a little spot and if you don't like how it looks then take a razor and scrape it off.

Please don't ruin it. Is there a problem with it or do you just not like the color. There are thousands of people who would die for what you have. If it is the color you dont like try getting a really nice fireplace screen to go with your room. If you really hate it have it removed and sell it you could make a lot of money on it and replace it with something you like.
