deep breaths and counting to a specific number (10 for most people) usually works
if you're like me and it doesn't really help much then you have to find other options. in general i take myself out of the situation if possible and find another way to release the built up emotion. generally by doing something physical. some people have suggested a punching bag but I've never done that. running usually helps but sometimes it fuels the flames. so then I either take it out on a soccer ball (just kicking the sh*t out it and then running after it and doing it again until I've calmed down). going to the batting cages if possible tends to help too. in both cases I'm able to focus my anger on something that it's "okay" to hit.
when I'm not able to do something physical (because of the weather, time, my stupid ankle, or whatever) i try to write out what I'm feeling. either in a journal, short story, poem whatever. just something to get it out of my head and off my chest.
hope that helps

Think FIREWORK.
What lights your firework? What triggers the anger?
Is it like a rocket (flies off), a mortar (explodes) or does it just fizzle out? How do you respond?
Is there a big bang and people get hurt or is it pleasant to look at? What are the end results?
Once you have a handle on the triggers just being aware of them can make you less likely to to "light the fuse".
You've hit on an enormous subject area here. Try the book "Anger Management" by Faupel, Herrick and Sharp. Aimed at those working with kids but has a good structure.

The best way to deal with anger is to not let it build up in the first case! I know this is often easier said than done, but its the best way. Failing that you need to find an outlet for your anger. This could be a variety of things - some people turn to their creative/artistic sides, others to their physical sides (exercising and the like), and some just need a distraction by reading.
What I will say is that it is often rewarding to focus your anger into doing something productive and useful. For example, exercising is a great way of dealing with anger, as it relieves stress and gets you in better shape at the same time!
