I did that once and broke something off on the door that holds the batteries in, which is on the bottom of my camera so gravity is working against me. On a very short-term basis, I could hold the door closed while it powered up and I took a shot. On a longer-term basis, I have the door duct-taped closed and I use very good batteries that last a long time - Energizer Lithium. So my camera still works after the drop.
