Why do you people all think this is about empire building? When has an empire ever survived? As time progresses, lifespans of empires get shorter. The Roman Empire lasted about 500 years. The Third Reich lasted less than 10. Are we any more efficient than they were? If we were after an empire, do you think we'd start in the most volatile and unstable area of the world? Granted, there's oil there, but do you think the rest of the civilized world will stand by and let us take control of the world's economy? Yes, even the French would resist that. I think we have the best military in the world, but us against everybody is a bit much. We simply don't have the manpower to achieve that. We have just over 2.4 million people in the military (all branches combined). Just under 1.5 million of those are 'front line' combat troops. That is total strength. Do we have any hope of world domination using a paltry 1.5 million troops? China has more than that in boot camp. Russia is broke, but they'd fight us if we tried to control them. Fighting Russians is a bad idea, just ask the Germans.

Starting a 3rd world war would be a hopeless endeavor. You may think Bush is an idiot, but I don't. You don't make millions in the oil business without having some sense. Besides, he is surrounded by extremely competent military people who would see the futility of such a thing. Don't you think Colin Powell would be having a fit if he thought that was our intent?

The US is not trying to start WWIII. Democrats have not suggested that we are. Republicans always seem to get this wrong (as the first respondant to your question did). What has been said is that the current actions of the US MIGHT start a world war (please, all Republicans note the use of the word might). To suggest that it definitely will not lead to WWIII is short-sighted or plain lying. Nobody can tell for sure where this war is headed. I would not be surprised if the war ended tomorrow or if the war suddenly blossomed into what you suggest. Sadly, not all major politicians are against this war.

As for lying, I will quote our illustrious president:

"I don't think our troops ought to be used for what's called nation-building." --G.W. Bush, when trying to get elected, pointing out that he felt the Clinton administration chose erroneously to participate in this.

"We will be changing the regime of Iraq, for the good of the Iraqi people." --G.W. Bush, after starting his own nation-building campaign in Iraq... suddenly it was ok once he got elected.

I bet that if the shrub decides to invade Iran, we will have a huge war on our hands. I'm not sure if it will be a world war though. That would mean other countries would be involved, and they are all removing their troops from the war. IMPEACH THE SHRUB before he can start WWIII!!!

If WWIII starts any time soon, you will be able to point the finger at Iran. That much should be obvious.

Republicans suck. They started it. And they'll never end it. Us democrats and choice intelligent republicans don't want the war - and never wanted it.

We went to war with Iraq for no reason, and now Bush is going to lie about something else to make us go to war with Iran....for no ****ing reason.

Oh, and Osama bin Laden is dead. Just thought you should know.

Yes. The US is doing nothing more that protecting it's vested interests. Afghanistan was nothing more that a starting point to go into Iraq. Iraq will be nothing more that a springboard into either Iran or Syria.
