A photo driving license is sufficient when you take a ferry, assuming you're a British citizen I'm not sure about flying, you may need one(a passport) to get on the plane as proof of who you are. A work id card isn't ever good enough unless it is a forces one.

Southern Ireland is in the EU as is the UK.Even before both countries joined there was no requirement for passports. As in all cases of travel within EU some airlines require passport or photo ID.,not required for land or sea travel.Northern Ireland is British province and no passport or anything else is required

technically you don't Southern Ireland has always been one of the places you don't need a passport to get to from the UK. However some airlines will only let you travel if you have a passport. Others will accept a photo id card.
