I assume you are talking about customs officers stopping a vehicle to search it for drugs.

Les douaniers l’ont arrêté, espérant trouver du cannabis à l’intérieur. (if you are talking about a lorry)(un camion)
If it is a car, then it is “arrêtée” because a car in French is feminine. (une voiture)

You are uncertain about verbs in the present participle (which finish in –ing in English). It is easy as the ending of the present participle always ends in (–ant) in French.
In the sentence which you have chosen, you could achieve the same meaning by using the expression “in the hope” which is “dans l’espoir de” instead.

However using a noun substitute does not work for all verbs. For instance in the sentences "Il s'est fait mal en travaillant" (he hurt himself whilst working) or "Elle s'est sentie mal en marchant dans la rue" (she felt ill whilst walking in the street), or "Il s'est fait prendre en important de la drogue" (he got caught importing drugs), you could not find an identical equivalent without a verb. So be careful when trying to avoid the present participle.

I hope you find this helpful.

Les officiers l'ont arrêté(e - I suppose you're talking about a bar. Then you put an "e" at the end) dans l'espoir de trouver du cannabis caché à l'intérieur.

Usually, in English, you use the -ing form, whereas in French, you tend to use nouns. "en espérant" is ok, but using a noun sounds more French, more authentic, therefore better.
