We are getting our first Rainbow Lorikeet and I have been offer a very young chick and a 3 month old one. Just wondering if anyone has had experience with these birds and knows if its better to get them as young as possible or not. Also if I did get a very young one we would have to hand feed it and as Iv not done this before I am wondering if this is a good idea or not. Thanx :)

Rainbow lorikeets are an Australian native parot and they are legal to have as a pet, no license is required.

It depends on whether this species is protected or not. You could be breaking a law by gettng one.

Hi there. It is ideal to get one that is weaned because many good intentioned people have caused death to the very young due to inexperience. The feeding schedule is every 2-3 hours around the clock, the formula must be warmed but not hot which can happen in microwaves, the crop must be palpated to determine its fullness. Sometimes, the baby bird aspirates the formula in which it gets into the lungs and causes pneumonia with death as the end result . The 3 month old bird on the other hand should already be weaned. Make sure to ask. It is still very young and can be handled and trained. The choice is yours. Bonding is possible with most birds at any age. My belief is that the parents of the bird do the best job in feeding and there are probably other unknown benefits to the offspring. Perhaps, some passive immunity given to the chicks? It's a possibility. Have a nice week and weigh your choices carefully. Use your good judgment and experience to guide you.

It's spring and this is a mating behavior. I don't have lories -- I have caiques -- but they're behaving like this, too. My female has been very broody for about a month now, constantly seeks out dark secluded places and has laid 3 eggs so far (and I'm not letting her keep them because my other two caiques are not the same species as her and I don't want hybrid babies).

my experience with baby birds it is good to get them when they are young so you can train them your way.
