The History Channel did a show about the history of "Coffee" ( I love coffee).
Anyways, 2000 + years ago there were no water purification plants. Wine was the main source to purify water to drink. Most wines were not as intoxicating as they are now (machine perfected). In fact, wine was the process of mixing grapes and diluting water. The further North one traveled, different water purifications were invented (beer, vodka, ect) ... but in the Middle East, grapes were accessable. In fact, drinking straight water was almost non-existant. (Then the show evolved into coffee as being the industrial revolution waking us up).
So to answer your question ... kool aid was not invented yet, and water made ppl sick so they all drank wine.

Wine was culturally acceptable in Jesus time and to this day Jews use wine in everyday life. Even the children start drinking wine at a young age.

Actually, most churches use grape juice, as opposed to wine. The churches that use wine are following the biblical example. Those that don't do so for good reasons as well.
In 1869, a Christian dentist who was opposed to alcoholic beverages, worked to remove wine from Communion, and replaced it with a non-alcoholic version. He learned about pasteurization, and boiled grape juice to remove the yeast from the juice.
He then marketed his “unfermented communion wine” to churches in his local community. The dentist’s name was Dr. Thomas Welch, who (along with his son Charles) started the Welch’s Grape Juice company.

The yeast needs nutrients to work, and grapes work best. I tried to make some sugar wine and it did not work well, and there might be chemicals in cool aid that would inhibit the yeast. my best bet was buying frozen welshes grape juice and and mix 3-4 cans of concentrate for a gallon warm water and yeast.
