Scottish people are usually associated with thrift, resourcefulness, an intellectual orientation and the Protestant work ethic as well as being puritanical, although not as puritanical as the Russians.

There is some truth to all these assertions although these are still just trends and generalizations and you have to be careful not to paint every Scottish person this way.

A small portion of the Scottish population is still very rural and still Roman Catholic. These Scots are probably culturally closer to the people of Ireland in many ways.

Sadly, neither the Scots or the Irish have been very good at preserving their native languages be they Celtic (Gaelic and Cumbrian) or Pictish. Both peoples seem to be gradually going over to the English language exclusively.

Finally, I've been told by several tourists I've met from Scotland, that most Scots do not wear kilts. The kilt thing is somewhat of a myth.

There is a wonderful musical and country dancing tradition, as well as the national instrument, the bagpipes; a magnificent national dress; many whisky distilleries, each claiming to be the finest; a number of national dishes, most famous of which are haggis, oatcakes and smoked fish; and a proud history.
