I did it, it was a big risk but have been blonde of darker and lighter shades for about 4 years now and love it.
Its a big risk but you can minimise it by having it done professionally and start with highlights in a natural shade which will lighten your hair without being really obvious. You can then gradually go lighter as you get used to it and more confident. I didn't do that, just went brown to blonde in one afternoon but I had seen a photoshopped pic of myself blonde so had an idea it would work.
Also, professional colours don't ruin your hair, they are good quality and won't strip all the oils out. Having said that mine is dryer than it used to be but nothing that a decent conditioner doesn't solve.

I actually just did this to my hair about 2 months ago. I was a dark brown, and i wanted to go back to blonde. I didnt have the money to get it done so i did it myself.
I used the the cap made from Revlon and pulled most of my hair through then bleached it. Waited a few weeks, then being I knew the color it would turn my hair i did my whole head. Once i bleached my whole head i then died it to a dirty blonde. But you have to bleach the hair lighter then what you want to go.

I had coloured my hair almost Black for 3 years and have only recently gone blonde. Each time I saw my hairdresser we did a full head of foils and then toned them down with a brown toner to counteract any orange or brassiness. After about 3 full heads of foils she also did an all over colour of light brown and it turned out beautifully. The next 2 times she just did more full head foils and toned them with a blonde toner. It hasn't ruined my hair at all, although before my first lot of foils I let her cut some length off because there was such a build up of black in the ends.
Just make sure your hairdresser lightens it in foiled sections, not stripping/bleaching your full head because you will probably come out looking ridiculous and orange. And make sure you use a treatment shampoo and condition after you have had it done and you shouldn't have any problems.
Good luck

I have a friend that dyes her hair bright blonde and her natural hair is dark brown...It looks very trashy and she cant keep it up know matter how much she dyes it. When she dyes it her roots her hair looks brassy and uneven. Its broken off really bad to. If you really want to do it condition your hair really well and take really good care of it before and after you lighten in. Dont do it yourself go to a salon they will make it look great. Up keep is going to be tough though and expensive.

It depends how you look and the shade of your current hair color. I personally think you should stay with brown. Natural is the new big thing. Natural is beautifull. Thing is, it shouldn't be TOO bright of a blonde. From dark brown, to blonde is a big change. Ease it down and when you get used to your blonde hair and when you think you're ready, you can dye it a lighter blonde if you like! Good luck ;]

Blonde is for life not just Valentines day!
Go for it seek professional advice first then you can apply further treatments later on if you like it. There are many good home products on the market these days that are very gentle on the hair...that is if you follow the instructions. Like I said blonde is for life from then on in.

No for two reasons -
Blond does not take well on brown hair - it goes brassy or ginger
And it looks very cheap and nasty.
Stay brunette and maybe lowlight it with dark red tones instead.
Muchos sexy!

You ocan not lighten chemically treated hair (which yours is) without using bleach on it which can be very damaging - makes it straw like- and then its kinda yellow orange and then you have to put a blonde tone on it to cnacel out the oranges and stuff. You have to piock the right tone , opposite of what you want rid of.
Go to the hairdressers because its gonna be messy and smelly and good go terribly wrong adn cost you alot to do yourself.

Please, PLEASE make sure to go to a professional. One of my co-workers decided to go "blond" this weekend and ended up with ORANGE hair! Bringing dark hair to the lighter side is a lengthy and complicated process. Just because it looks simple does not mean that it is. Make sure to ask your stylist if blond is a good shade for you before you have him/her do it. Not all people are meant to be blond.

going from dark brown to dirty blond is a big change
dye dries out your hair so you would have to use a conditioner
