A psychiatrist should be able to do both.
Even better, this is the only kind of doctor I would trust with a diagnosis, because there are so many medical conditions that cause primarily mental discomfort, and therapists miss them altogether!
IE, alcoholism is often associated with UNDIAGNOSED diabetes or hormone disorders... for which a psychiatrist does blood tests.
However, psychiatrists tend to see the patient only for meds, and let the PsyD and PhD psychologists, as well as LMSW's or LCSW's do the talking part.
Social workers in general are a big mistake as far as I'm concerned, because their knowledge is less, their grade requirements were usually less to get into the grad program, and their research standards are flimsy.
I know; I've seen a couple, and only the PhD did me any good.
But even he couldn't help me without a blood test! I could've died from organ failure, with the thyroid so high, but I was being treated for anxiety disorder with mild panic attack tendencies. Try a heart racing on seven times the normal hormone!
Hello!
I know it's more than you asked, but I really think the whole world should know that we all need blood tests for medical conditions, even when we think our problems are mental only.

A Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist can prescribe meds. For counseling or therapy, a psychologist (PhD or PsyD) or a social worker (LCSW) can assist you in this area. Also, if you live in California or other states that recognize MFTs (marriage and family therapists), they can also provide individual and/or family therapy. Hope this helps!

you want a psychiatrist. They are the most knowledgeable in the area of medications and diagnoses....but they will likely refer you to a councilor for any kind of therapy in that area. Most psychiatrists do not have the time to council themselves.
