An idol is something outside of yourself that you worship and value.. Usually this is taken to mean an image of a god; however it is important to interject that many that may bow to an image of, say, Hanuman, do not think the image itself is the god, but rather a representation of it. In the broader sense, an idol can be anything--some worship money, some worship the idea of becoming famous. They put the worship of these things above all else.

IDOL, IDOLATRY
An idol is an image, a representation of anything, or a symbol that is an object of passionate devotion, whether material or imagined. Generally speaking, idolatry is the veneration, love, worship, or adoration of an idol. It is usually practiced toward a real or supposed higher power, whether such power is believed to have animate existence (as a human, an animal, or an organization) or is inanimate (as a force or lifeless object of nature). Idolatry generally involves some form, ceremony, or ritual.

AN IDOL IS ANYTHING OR PERSON THAT BECOMES ( IN YOUR MIND ) MORE VALUABLE THAN YOUR CREATOR.....YOU DISTANCE YOURSELF FROM GOD AND GRADUALLY FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO WORSHIP ( THIS IS BECAUSE GOD PUT A GOD QUEST INSIDE ALL OF US --THIS IS WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT THAN ANIMALS,THEY HAVE NO GOD QUEST )......ALL THESE THINGS ARE PART OF CREATION----THE 1ST. COMMANDMENT IS TO WORSHIP GOD & GOD ALONE --BRING NO ARTIFICIAL gods BEFORE ME...NONE OF CARVED WOOD OR STONE OR EARTHEN CLAY TO DEFILE MY PRESENCE...I ALONE AM A JEALOUS GOD ...I CREATED ALL THAT YOU HAVE & ALL THAT YOU ARE OR WILL BE .....DO NOT WORSHIP MY CREATION , WHICH WILL PASS AWAY, ONLY I AM, FOR I & MY WORD WILL NEVER PASS AWAY--FOREVER.........................

Any created thing outside of God cannot be worshipped and this would be idolatry.
