No sharp corners- avoid glass and metal. Sturdy- if you can shake an otem like a bookcase or shelf, then bolt it to the wall because babies pull themselves up and throw all their weight on objects (they don't know objects are not stable).
Anthing you don't want baby to touch should be up high out of reach or covered, or put a basket with toys in front of it.
Get down on your hands and knees and look around- any wires, electrical, metal or unsafe things should be rectified immediately. No extension cords: cover all outlets. Stand-up lamps should be retired til baby is older.
Keep decor baby-friendly- basket of flowes instead of vases and ceramic. Knick-knacks, candles, potpourri up high. Keep toys and books easily accessible and baby will focus on them
Good luck!

I think others have said stay with soft fabrics and no furniture that a baby could be injured on. I replaced all table decorations with baskets. Then they (a toddler) cannot hurt themselves or the furniture. When they are older and safer other things can come back down.

When my children were small I NEVER had glass tables. Now I have them but my babies are 30 and 36 so they are safe now.

Enjoy your toddler.

If you have the choice of picking a couch... pick one that isn't too close to the ground. The longer you can keep them from jumping up on it, the better. Also you need to have all your book cases and other top heavy peices anchored to the wall. I have 17 month old twins and I've pretty much had to change my whole house and design it around them. No cords... coffee tables with pointy edges... all that good stuff.

1. Remove everything from the room.
2. Fill with age appropriate toys and bean bag chairs!
