Well, to find anyone...it helps to know if you should look in the phone book, or the cemetery. Under normal circumstances, it is harder to find someone living, since there are rights to privacy involved (like unlisted phones, etc).
People who have died since 1960 to present are usually listed in the social security death index (go to rootsweb.com, and click on searches). Doc H Howard sounds like a nickname, so you MIGHT need to get the right full name. With a date and place of death, you can work to find an obituary, that often lists living family members.
Another option is to google "genealogy beginner" that explains some of the tricks to getting started. There are tons of tutorials out there.
