"erlos" is the Old Saxon word for "men". It is related to the Anglo-Saxon "eorlas" which meant "noblemen", from which we get the English title "Earl".

"Heruli" were an ancient Germanic tribe who's name was derived from the same root.

"Erlo" is still used as a given name in some parts of Germany.

So my guess is that is of German origin.

well, YOU sound like it really means a lot! In order to truly identify this (is it a family name?), you really should trace the person who had/has it.
I "worked" a family name... Fullingim.. which everyone had a brick wall on.The break on the history came when it flashed on me that it was probably a mispelling, or more appropriately, a variation of something else. Keep in mind.. in the 1800's and before, most people were illiterate, and sometimes the so called "correct" spelling wound up being what the county clerk wrote down.
Just to pretend it is your grandpa... once you get into the 1800's, you should be able to track the family in census records. And part of those records is the question "where were you born". Another possibility is a name "change" (not deliberate) when someone immigrated, and the officials could not spell the original.

Drop me a note, and I'll be happy to get you going in the right direction.

The only "ERLOS" indexed in the 1930 USA census was Henry, bc 1847. He was in an Old People's Home in Quincy, Illinois, and gave his birthplace as Hesse, which is part of modern Germany.

If the name could have been spelled ERLES, then there are people born in England, France and Germany by that name in the 1930 USA census index.
