Not necessarily tights, but certainly spandex-type shorts are in order.

This type of apparel has several advantages. First, it is close fitting so that it supports "everything" better rather than having stuff (male and female) moving around. Second, it gives some support to musclature so your legs don't get tired as fast. Another reason for this type of clothing is that it doesn't abrade your skin as easily making it a more positive experience.

I could go on but I tend to get nastygrams from long answers.

I usually ride in tights or 3/4 shorts, and find when I ride in regular shorts that I keep catching them on the saddle when I move on and off it (I've nearly fallen over several times and no longer try to ride in them). One problem that tights eliminate.

Check the Feb.latest issue of Mountain Bike Action magazine ( page 60 & 61 to be precise) 'Baggy versus Skin tight'----it will answer your query to the max.

lycra is only really effective for people who race hardcore. it cuts down on the wind resistance instead of having a bunch of clothes flapping in the wind. the average person doesnt need it. but if you have a really nice bike and you are really fast, then i dont see a problem wearing it. i wear mine during the summer all the time when im out on a long ride. (which is about 7 days a week for me)

but seriously, there is only about a 2% gain in speed from tight clothes. dont beat yourself up if you dont have a pair.

Tights, or just lycra in general?

Even if you like baggy shorts, you need something to protect your nethers. Picture this: take a tender portion of your anatomy, make it hot and sweaty, put all your weight on it, and then rub back and forth for two hours to see how it feels.

Cycling shorts are specifically designed to wick sweat away, prevent chafing, add padding, and support muscles. If you don't need any of that, then it's YOUR taint on the line, not mine.

The real benefit in my minds eye is pure sex appeal.
Oh right and aerodynamicy of course.

Anything from Lululemon I highly recommend trying out.

Good luck.. and ride on.

Well it is best to wear tights if you do not want to shave your legs because its nothing to do with aerodynamics or anything, it is to do with if you fall off your bike. because all these racers in the tour de france, when they fall off, if they have hair all in the cut its harder to get the grit out and it also keeps your legs warm :)

I tend to use running leggings (ron hill tracksters) or leggings like helly hansen with shorts.

they keep you warm when riding
- and for us men they keep our parts in place: by that i mean when riding you go up and down, they stop us crushing our most important part!

...yeah, it's a lightweight, aerodynamic way to keep you warm while not getting your pantleg greasy or chewed up or caught on something on your bike as you pedal...thats all of it
