We were told in school that the reason that people are so afraid of the dentist is because it is an instinct. How often do you see a mammal on their back? Not very often. Think about it. Plus, the dentist is in "your space" very close to your brain. Your brain is the center of all functions of your body. What is the first thing you do if you hear a load bang you are not expecting? You cover your head to protect it. This same principle applies when you are in the dental chair. You are on your back and someone is working next to your brain. Instinct tells our bodies that this is unnatural and it makes most of us very uncomfortable. True.

I don't care what kind of pain killers they use, every dental procedure I have undergone causes me pain, not 'discomfort.' PAIN! Either the pain is during the procedure, or after, when the anesthetic wears off. I also dislike the smell of tooth decay when they drill, and the sound of the drill itself is very irritating. That is why I dislike the dentist. I have sensitive teeth, and this could be a factor, others people may have no problems with the dentist.

I am afraid of the dentist becaue I have increased risk of heart infection and have to take antibiotics for a week before I go. It is like going in for surgery and possibly dying every time I go it. (I have leaky and sticky heart valves--that is where the risk comes from.)

Well, it's associated with pain, you have tubes sticking in your mouth, and a person is drilling on your teeth. Not many people like that.
