I'm a bit concerned my younger nephew may be scared or will it be okay?

They really don't understand all the hoopla. They just want to play and have cake.....I wouldn't worry about anyone being scared unless they are planning something scary....then that might be bad.

"What's going on? These clothes itch, I don't like them. What's that sound? Who's that? And that? Why are there so many people around? Ugh, big hairy wet kisses... gross...Stop! Huh? Shapes covered in paper? K give some crinkly stuff here... Ooh what's that dancing orange thing? Everyone's talking so loudly...I can't hear my own screams! Okay, I'm better now. Mmm, what's this sweet stuff? Oh My God it's amazing! And spreads around quite well...Aww, all gone? Okay. Sleepy time."
Basically it will go by in a whirl for him, and he'll be neither happy about it nor sad. Both maybe, but not one or the other.

They typically react very well and love it! As long as there are not too many "planned" activities. Also not to make them try to open all the gifts if there are alot - maybe just a few or it can be too overwhelming.
I think the most important part of planning it is to plan a time of day that they will be most alert - not before a nap time or they will be cranky! They love their first birthday cake the most!

They tend to be completely underwhelmed. After all, they have absolutely no concept at all of what a birthday is or why anyone thinks its important. I think the main thing is just to ensure that everyone else doesn't have too much riding on it, as that's really the only thing that would be likely to upset a child - everyone else expecting a lot from them when all they want to do is play with the cardboard boxes!

Some kids cry, others could care less, and still others will be so happy they are bouncing off the walls. It depends on the kid really. My daughter was a little put off at first due to the amount of people, but as soon as she realized there were gifts and cake everything was happy.

My first 2 had a blast - not knowing what was going on but loved the activity and excitement. My youngest was a little overwhelmed. A lot of family from out of town so he wasnt used to them as much. He took a nap in the middle of it all! I am hoping this year will be more fun for him!

Everyone is different, but my daughter got so overwhelmed. She ended up clinging to my hip, crying through cake, and didn't seem to enjoy most of it. I think it's more for the adults than the kids. Keep it small so that he doesn't feel scared by all of the big people staring at him and poking at him all day.

If a huge party is thrown, most of them get overwhelmed and upset. If it's just a few people over for cake, they usually are amused but don't grasp the whole idea.

My son was very shy and afraid of lots of people around the time that he turned one. To make sure that he was happy on his birthday we really limited the amount of guests at his party. I think we only had 7 people total and he was fine. I know other kids that weren't bothered at all and there were tons of guests there. I guess it is a kid by kid decision!

Depends how wild the party gets...
First b-day is for the parents, not for the kid. Because he/she couldn't care less about presents and cake. But definitely would object to all those adults around that throw off his routine.
