I grew up in New Jersey and I learned to call it "soda". 20 years ago I moved to Ohio where everyone calls it "pop". I've never gotten used to it and still say soda--or the name of the soda that I'm talking about. "Pop" sounds kinda silly to me.

I lived in western NY for 15 years. After you get laughed at so many times for calling it soda, you learn to call it pop.

Soda. It's SODA dammit!!
Sadly, I live on what seems to be the North South boundary line for saying soda vs. pop, so I hear pop all the time.
And it drives me CRAZY!!

If you are offering your father a carbonated beverage: then...
Would you care for a soda, pop? or..
Would you care for a soda pop, pop?
I would opt for the first example as the second sounds redundant.

I usually use the name brand. When referring to multiple name brands I call them soda.
Such as I will state:
"I am getting a diet Mountain Dew from the soda machine"

soda (i'm from the northeast) i think it's funny when some people call all sodas coke. They'll classify something like orange soda as coke. it reminds me of the whole band-aid and kleenex issue
oh i love capitalism!
