Every weekday morning and evening, the roads in and around Watford town centre are almost grid-locked. What can we do to keep the traffic moving? Also, how can we reduce the overall amount of traffic in Watford?

Whats Watford?

Why single out Watford in particular? Truth is everywhere in Britain, particularly around London, is steadily being paralysed by traffic congestion. If you build new roads the traffic merely expands to fill those roads (witness the M25) and you're soon back to square one. There are simply too many cars. And things are getting worse. The only way to reduce traffic is to either get people to stay at home or to use public transport. Don't look to the government for help or guidance because they want people to drive. The more cars on the road (particularly ones stuck in traffic jams) the more tax revenue they get. Of couse if Watford was in France or Germany it would quite likely have a light rail system - but in this country, dream on!

I know, it's a nightmare! I won't work there any more as it's so bad to drive in. However, it could be vastly improved by increasing the number of buses serving the area, and encouraging people to use those instead... I think part of the problem is its proximity to the M25, and the fact it's just on the cusp of the urban sprawl heading into London, so it's perfect commuter belt but also has its own share of industry and offices.

The multudinous traffic lights don't do much for it either...

Beyond flattening it and starting again, or revamping the ring road, there's very little to be done beyond finding your own best shortcuts and encouraging people to use (and run!) more trains and buses...

It is a very old problem due to the lack and withdraw of trams before and after the war !
The trains are not enough, their number is clearly insufficient !
You should ask for strengthening the rail services of public transport !
