My old roommate left a forwarding address. Can I write this on the mail she receives or will they not send it to her? Do I just write return to sender? It's important stuff (like taxes and all that) so I want her to get it, but I just don't see that it's my responsibility to send her a package with all her mail or anything.

Make a note on a post its saying she/he moved forwarding address is. They will get to them.
And you are right it is not your responsibility to send her anything just to make sure it is received.

I just moved to a new apartment, and there was at least a month's worth of mail in the mailbox, and not all of it was addressed to just the last tenant! I rubberbanded it all together and dropped in the nearest mail box with a note that said "Return to Sender" rather than contacting my management company and writing forwarding addresses on all of it.

If this is a former friend, or if you were on friendly terms with her, take out the important stuff and forward it along. The rest of it, like personal letters and so forth, you should return to sender so that it's the sender's responsibility to contact her. If it takes a while to reach her, it's her own fault for not making the necessary arrangements in advance.

You are not responsible for spending your own money, or even much of your time, on tracking her down. Behave graciously and that's all you can do. If this is someone you still regard as a friend, have you considered calling her to ask what she wants done with it? She might be willing to come by and pick it up, thus taking the entire burden off your shoulders.

Phone numbers for the post office are in the front of the phone book so you can call to get an answer to this question. They probably even have a website with FAQ.. In any case, I just write, "No longer at this address" and drop it back in the mail. If she properly left a forwarding address with the post office, she'll get it. Or, you could write on each piece of mail, "Forward to ...........and her new address." In either case, do not save up a package of mail and pay to send it.

You can write the new addy on the envelope and put it back in the mail box. And also send her a note to remind her to change her mailing address with the post office.

If you don't have her new address, then write return to sender on the front without any additional postage then put it in any postbox. If you do have her new address, write it on the front as well and post it without additional stamps too.
