When peopl say you should do squats to get more toned, help with fitness, etc, are they referring to doing squats with weights or something? or just squatting for a few seconds and repeating that? also any tips for getting ready for track to give slightly significant results while inside my house?

I suspect they mean squats with resistance , like weight lifting.

If you have stairs in your house , run them , up fast down walking. This is a good way to get ready for track inside on a limited budget.

Squatting a barbell loaded with weights is one of best exercises there is for the body. It develops many major muscles and improves coordination. Make sure to practice proper form. Never sacrifice form for the ability to squat more weight. I have been unable to bend over once for a month because I didn't leave my ego at home.

Squats help for track. Most people say it will benefit only sprinters, but distances up to 5k are substantially anaerobic (like 30% anaerobic and 70% aerobic) and can benefit from squatting.

I know Bill Pearl's book "Getting Stronger" has a whole section of specific exercise programs for every sport and track and field was on there.

Squats are a particular weight lifting exercise using a barbell.
